Our 2nd Annual Member Awards were handed out by Awards Committee Chair Jeff Itzkow of
AccuManagement Ltd. to deserving members who have contributed much to our association over
the past year as well as to a member who has done much in the community with his charitable
activities and to the Resident Manager of the Year as voted by the residents of their building.
This year’s winners were…
Member of the Year
Bob Shaer, A.S.H. Management Group Inc.
Bob has been an active member of the PPMA since ASH joined the association in November
1994. Bob was first elected to the board of directors in 1996 as Treasurer and then in 1998 he
was elected as President, where he has served in that capacity for five consecutive years. It is
through his guidance, professionalism and vision that we have seen the association grow into a
vital organization that is regularly consulted by all levels of government.
Bob has also furthered the interests of the association and the residential rental industry through
his participation on numerous committees such as the CMHC Housing Advisory committee, the
West Broadway TLC committee, the MREA Advisory committee, the City of Winnipeg Solid
Waste Task Force Committee - to name just a few. He has also fostered close communications
with the Residential Tenancies Branch, and the ministers responsible for Consumer & Corporate
Affairs and Housing.
We thank Bob for his tireless dedication to our association and our industry and look forward to
his involvement with the PPMA for many years to come.
Associate Member of the Year
Don Preteau, Shaw Cable
Since Shaw joined the PPMA in January 1998, Don has made an impact on our association. Not
only has he proved a valuable resource to the association in terms of Shaw’s financial support of
the association, but also in terms of time and talent dedicated to ensuring the PPMA’s continued
growth.
Don was elected to the board of directors in 2000, when Associate Members were first allowed to
serve as Directors. Not only did he become actively involved on various committees like the
annual golf tournament (where Shaw has been a regular sponsor, including two years as the
Marquis sponsor), he has also chaired the hugely successful Conference & Trade Show
committee since its inception two years ago and the Shaw offices have also been host to the
monthly board meetings since May 2001.
This is the second year in a row that Don has been the recipient of our Associate Member of the
Year award and deservedly so. We thank him for his past dedication to the association and look
forward to his continued support.
Outstanding Community Service
Jeff Rabb, Dorchester Developments Ltd.
Dorchester Developments has been a member of the PPMA since 1994 and Jeff has lead the
company from its infancy to now being one of the largest and most successful property
management companies in Winnipeg. As a business person, he conducts his affairs in a very
responsible manner and with the utmost of integrity. He also serves as a mentor and counsel to
other independent business people.
Although Jeff manages a time consuming business, he has found the time to participate within the
community as he considers it to be the responsibility of every good citizen. He has served as
Chairman of the Children’s Hospital Foundation golf tournament for the past six years, the
YMHA Sports Dinner board for ten years, the Rady Centre board for three years, the Glendale
Golf & Country Club board for six years, is a major supporter of Ronald McDonald House, is a
the current Chair of the Asper JCC Capital Campaign as well as Club President of Variety Club
fundraising and last but certainly not least as a hockey and soccer coach within his local
community.
His success is owed in no small part to his supportive family of wife Jane and three children. Jeff
is truly a shining example of community commitment and is an excellent recipient of this year’s
Outstanding Community Service Award.
Resident Manager of the Year
Henry Wiebe, Rancho Management Services (Manitoba) Ltd.
Henry began his career as on site Manager with Manitoba Housing where he spent two years in
Mixed Housing and five years in Senior’s Buildings.
Henry and his wife Shirley then moved to Vancouver and entered the management field with
Middlegate Developments, managing a hi-rise building called Oceanic on English Bay. Because
of a family illness they moved back to Winnipeg and Henry took a temporary position as head of
maintenance for Shelter Corporation at East Shore Gardens. He later worked on a maintenance
team at the Courts of St James.
It will be three years this October since Henry came to work for Rancho Reality as the On Site
Manager at Sterling Towers. The residents have never looked back! Henry has always been a
willing and eager part of the Rancho team; no request either from residents or staff goes unheeded
and is always performed with a smile and a kind word.
Henry received numerous votes from the residents of the building he manages, who spoke very
highly of his character and professionalism. The residents wrote such glowing reports of Henry
as, “...he brings confidence and outstanding competence to his endeavours. We have to admire
the smooth management which makes us feel most comfortable in this environment.”
We wish Henry continued success in his current and future endeavours.
