Executive Director's Message

Although the PPMA did not become officially incorporated as a non-profit organization until 1997, the association has been formally representing the interests of the professional property manager for more than two decades.  

The PPMA had very humble beginnings.  Three men decided to get together a form a body whose primary goal was to ensure the fair and ethical representation of “Landlords”, subsequent to the introduction of rent controls in the early 1970’s.  The group was small and their voice was all but lost on the government of their day.

  Without much fanfare, the group abandoned its cause and went about the business of property management in an environment whose view of the “Landlord” was draconian at best  

Several years later the PPMA was resurrected by the sons of those first three visionaries.  And although the faces had changed, neither the issue of rent controls had changed nor had the negative image of the “Landlord”.  

Well a lot has changed over the past 20 years.  And while some things remain the same - rent controls - we are happy to report that some things have undoubtedly changed for the better.  We have seen the metamorphosis of the “Landlord” into the “Professional Property Manager”.  

The small group of 3 men has blossomed into a membership of more than  80 companies, representing more than  54, 000 residential rental units across the province of Manitoba.  The PPMA is regularly consulted by all three levels of government when issues affecting our industry are being discussed and is considered to be the strong and credible voice of our industry to government, regulatory bodies and the media.

  Our efforts have expanded from the single issue that necessitated our birth to include other important matters such as:

·         The development of standard property management forms;

·         The development of property management education seminars;

·         The development of an industry focused trade show & conference;

·         The development & implementation of a safety program called “Apartment Watch”, which makes our buildings, neighbourhoods & communities safer;

·         The creation of member awards that recognize the outstanding efforts of our members and their employees for their dedication to professionalism within our industry; and

·         Participation by a number of PPMA members on numerous committees within and outside of our association (such as the CMHC, MREA, West Broadway & Spence Neighbourhood groups) to get a better understanding of their issues and to effectively & accurately represent our issues.  

And while we have seen our membership double in the last 18 months, I would like to take a moment to recognize a few companies who have been dedicated to this organization for a number of years through membership with the PPMA.
